Why did we join together?

For years, Martin (harmonica), John (keyboard) and Don (guitar and bass) have been neighbors and friends. They all loved great music and would sit in each other’s back yard playing or listening. Eventually, in 2016. they decided to form a band.

They knew they needed a drummer, so they called their long time friend and experienced drummer, Dave, aka, the Pace Maker. Dave was very excited to join the group, and since drums are the most difficult instrument to transport, practice started happening in Dave’s basement. It so happens, Dave’s wife, Jean, loves music and to sing, so they invited her to join the group, too.

After about half a year later, Don invited Bob to join the group. Bob is an excellent trumpet player and a well-trained musician, but was working on teaching himself the bass. With his knowledge of music and disciplined approached to things, Bob’s skills as a bass player were solid when he came on board.

Two more years passed by with the six friends faithfully rehearsing and sometimes playing at yard parties in Don’s driveway for people passing by on their way the St. Patrick’s Day Parade or the Ridge Run, and family gatherings. But they knew something was missing. Most great rock songs have a rhythm and a lead guitar. Bob had a friend by the name of Bobby with whom he played in various jazz bands. Bobby, also a very well trained musician, plays killer saxophone but was just as proficient on guitar. So Bobby joined the group and the bands potential to make great music increased many times over!

How did we get our name? We wanted our name to evolve as are musical identity did. We didn’t want to push it. We played around with lots of ideas, but nothing felt quite right. One day Bob W. reminded us of a myth about how man stole fire from the gods. We liked how that spoke to the audacity of our project: post middle-aged people having this much fun doing something creative with friends. Now Bob and Bobby have been in bands for years. Dave has played drums with his friends in the basement since high school, but the endeavor of creating a rock and soul band…. that takes some guts… so here we are! Steal the Rain! Doing the seemingly impossible, and having a marvelous time doing it!
